Italian: Alphabet

The native Italian alphabet consists of 21 letters, 5 vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and 16 consonants (b, c, d, f, g, h, l, m, n p, q, r, s, t, v, z). Borrowed words in Italian can also contain 5 more letters: j, k, w, x and y.

The Italian alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet, similar to English and French.

Similar to French, the Italian alphabet has diacritics (à, è, é, ì, í, î, ò, ó, ù, ú), but does not have ligatures.
